Our Story
I’m Alex, and what started in 2014 with a single coffee van (and a dream) has now become West Berkshire Roastery - complete with two coffee roasters and a Labrador who thinks he’s the CEO.
Along the way, I uncovered some truths: coffee is one of the planet’s most sprayed crop. Pesticides? Chemicals? Absolutely everywhere. So, I ditched the usual beans and went on a quest for the good stuff: direct-traded coffees that don’t come with a side of artificial pesticides.
With a bit of Berkshire flair and caffeine-fuelled creativity, I’m here to bring you one of the finest (and cleanest) coffee experiences you’ll ever sip. I hope you’ll agree. It’s coffee refreshingly drama free.

In El Salvador, coffee farms have become a protective habitat - and one of the few remaining areas - of natural forests. All of Fernando’s plantations are Rainforest Alliance, Bird Friendly and organic certified, helping preserve a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. These protected forests mean that 100 percent of the coffee plants are shade grown, ideal for the slow ripening of the cherries, which benefits the final cup flavour.
Santa Elena farm sits at an impressive 1,850-1,900 metres above sea level, with the coffee mill located near Coatepeque Lake, at the base of the Apaneca Ilamatepec mountain range. The farm houses clay patios, maintaining the traditional method for drying coffee. Harvest usually occurs between December and April; Fernando employs 50 full-time workers, with 250 part-time, during cropping.
After nine months of growth, the coffee is carefully hand-picked before undergoing five levels of sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe cherries are selected. It’s this kind of attention to detail that is reflected in the vibrancy of flavours, and the strong structure of the cup in Fernando’s coffees.

I’ve been using WBR for 18mths now and mainly having the Signature Gold with the odd small batch or other blend from time to time. I’ve used Pact and Exhale coffee roasters in the past but neither come close to the Signature Gold blend and service from WBR. Alex has always been super quick to respond to any questions and shipping is normally very quick.
I enjoy getting up and having a large espresso every morning but since I have ordered your dark and medium roast the experience has heightened even more. The flavours are ripe and fresh and the crema is beautiful. It pours like liquid gold as I watch my Sage Bambino prepare my morning ritual. Thank you for such a great product I can not fault it. Awesome!
Came across this coffee on Google as I was searching for mycotoxins free organic coffee and thought I’d give them a try. I went for the signature roast based on the amount of reviews and awards the have won. When I pulled my first shot of espresso I didn’t really like the taste. I realised this was because the beans were too fresh and so they weren’t dialled in yet; as time went on the taste began to get better and better. After about 1.5-2 weeks of the roast date (and proper dialling in) I can confidently say this is one of the best coffees I have ever had! I have learnt that fresh beans give off CO2 gas and the beans need to rest for a small period before they can be used. I will definitely be using WBR as my go to coffee and will be ordering regularly. I’m using the sage barista pro, grind settings are inner burr: 4, outer set to 6 / 7 depending on how you like it and extraction time is 25-30 seconds for a 1:2 ratio. I get perfect golden crema which is foamy and a full body taste profile with this setup. I will be experimenting with 1:3 ratio too. I would highly recommend WBR and will be trying out their other roasts

Having tried nearly all the organic coffee beans available online in the UK I must say Signature Gold is by far the most satisfying cup of coffee one can make at home either as a straight black or espresso

These signature gold beans are delicious! 18g in 36g out in 26 seconds at 9 bar was where I found delicious caramel flavours with enough acidity and strength to cut through the milk. Easily top 3 of my favourite beans. Highly recommend! Can’t wait to try the rest WBR have to offer. They are also organic which is a huge plus.

I’ve been using Exhale organic coffee but thought I’d try this option for a change. I’m really impressed with the quality of this coffee, I’m 2 weeks in now and storing them in an Airscape container has kept them nice and fresh. I really liked it was roasted the day before it was shipped and they arrived very quickly. I think they are also great value for money for organic so I will definitely be ordering more.

I tried this coffee after seeing a promotion on facebook. West Berkshire is the fourth roasting company I have tried, I love good coffee and had a feeling that there might be something better at an affordable price available. This coffee is great ! The search is over and no more FOMO!
I recently saw the coffee advertised on Facebook and the tasting notes were something I liked the sound of. Most coffee tastes nothing like it smells in the packet but this is pretty much spot on. I use 15g of coffee (cafeterie blend) 209ml just boiled water and 4 minutes is perfect for me. I’ve never bothered with weighing the grounds before and just chucked it in but it really made a difference! In my favourite coffee cup, black with a nice view of the garden!
We recently changed from a Nespresso machine to a bean to cup machine, and our first round of beans was from a well known online retailer. We was slightly disappointed and thought we bought a poor coffee machine.
We wanted use somewhere local to us and tried their signature gold beans. Straight away the smell of the beans we knew these would be superior to what we bought online. Without telling my partner I had changed the coffee beans, she knew straight away the coffee tasted much better and more flavoursome. We now love our coffee machine and is part of our morning routine.
Can’t wait to try their other beans and come highly recommended! One huge benefit for us was being to pick up our order and have a chat about coffee, making the whole experience superior.
I have decided to move away from Chemical farming where I can and still retain the flavours of Specialty Coffee. The Signature Gold did not let me down. Roasted and same day dispatch left me salivating for a week. It was tougher than asking our faithful hound to wait a few days for a juicy bone! The wait was well worth it. Chocolate, Caramel and dog paw, biscuit overtones. I have used with a Melita pour over, black. Also a milki flat white with, you guessed it, Organic oat milk. All weighed and dialed in for classic ratios. Sweetness and flavours sublime! An Organic Delight!
