Our Story
I’m Alex, and what started in 2014 with a single coffee van (and a dream) has now become West Berkshire Roastery - complete with two coffee roasters and a Labrador who thinks he’s the CEO.
Along the way, I uncovered some truths: coffee is one of the planet’s most sprayed crop. Pesticides? Chemicals? Absolutely everywhere. So, I ditched the usual beans and went on a quest for the good stuff: direct-traded coffees that don’t come with a side of artificial pesticides.
With a bit of Berkshire flair and caffeine-fuelled creativity, I’m here to bring you one of the finest (and cleanest) coffee experiences you’ll ever sip. I hope you’ll agree. It’s coffee refreshingly drama free.

Simmer Down 50% Decaf is our half caff coffee for coffee drinkers who want the comfort of regular coffee without the full hit. This half caff blend balances caffeinated coffee with decaf coffee in a 50/50 mix, so you get half the caffeine and a smoother ride when your caffeine intake needs a reset.
Expect a medium roast cup with a rounded sweetness - think vanilla fudge, caramelised biscuit, and a gentle milk chocolate finish. It works as a breakfast blend style coffee, and it’s also a smart pick if you deal with caffeine sensitivity or occasional caffeine jitters.
If you want a calmer “caff” experience without going fully decaf, this half caff coffee keeps your routine simple: same rituals, fewer spikes.

Back in 1995, the Bayter Family rolled up their sleeves and dove headfirst into the agricultural scene at El Vergel farm. Avocado was their main squeeze, but when avocado prices took a nosedive in 2006, they knew it was time to shake things up. So, they tossed some coffee varieties into the mix – catimore, red, yellow caturra – and boom, a coffee empire was born! Fast forward to 2016, and with a little guidance from coffee guru Miguel Jimenez, they planted speciality coffee varieties, setting the stage for some serious coffee greatness.
Then, in a stroke of genius, they embraced natural coffee processes in 2018, tinkering with fermentation control like mad scientists in a lab. And let's not forget their claim to fame – the Koji fermentation process, a game-changer in the green coffee game! Now, meet the dynamic trio behind the scenes: Martha Montenegro, along with her coffee-savvy partners Elias and Shady. Together, they're not just brewing coffee; they're brewing up a whole community revolution!

Did you know?
Decaf coffee is still packed with antioxidants, magnesium, potassium, and niacin. Only the caffeine molecule is extracted during the decaffeination process.
How we remove the caffeine from our coffee:
- The green coffee beans are soaked/cleaned in water, as the beans expand the pores open up and the caffeine becomes mobile.
- Pressured Carbon Dioxide is introduced, this combined with the present water creates sparkling water. The CO2 acts like a magnet to the caffeine molecules, extracting it from the beans.
- The water is then drained into an evaporator which precipitates the caffeine rich carbon dioxide out of the water.
- This cycle is repeated until the caffeine level is low enough to be classified as decaf.
- The decaffeinated coffee is then gently dried until it reaches its original moisture content and is then ready for roasting.

Following a forced switch to decaf, I turned to the internet to tell me which decaf was the best! However it was a Facebook ad that caught my attention and I am so glad I clicked on the link. It is delicious! Really flavoursome. It is now a treat drink and I look forward to savouring it.

Bought this 3 times in a row now. And I will continue to do so. Best decaf coffee for home, I looked for Medium to dark roast, low acidity, nutty. It ticked all the boxes. Plus it has wonderful chart! I learned that any fruity note is too acidic for my taste. This is my go to forever coffee! Much better than the Grind at work or the coffee at we work. I always feel I miss my coffee when I’m having coffee not at home.

I'm not good at flavour notes, but I get almond/marzipan? Tasty anyway.
It's a relatively light roast for espresso, so the challenge as always is getting good enough extraction for a nice balance. For this reason it suits Moka especially well.
Gone are the days where the de-caf brew leaves you feeling something was missing from the taste.
As someone who loves coffee and is sensitive to caffeine; this has allowed me to keep my morning routine without the 'grumpiness' or 'backache' that I seem to get when I have a caffeinated brew.

First time trying West Berkshire Roastery and very impressed. The decaff is very smooth with a delicate flavour of vanilla and hazelnut. I drink it with oat milk which makes a nice nutty & creamy drink.

I initially was gifted WBR coffee, and when I ran out I just had to order more. It works out slightly more expensive than supermarket coffee, but it is worth it! The taste is leagues better and not only that, it’s supporting a local business!

I’ve had a few different coffees from West Berkshire Roastery and they’ve been consistently great. This time I tried the Simmer Down 50% Decaf as I’m trying to cut back my caffeine intake a little. The coffee was a hit - really smooth and had body - and I would highly recommend it.

Just tried your de-caf coffee and I am pleased to say it tastes just as good as the full blown coffee, so when I need a de-caf I don't have to put up with a second rate cup of coffee.
