Our Story

I’m Alex, and what started in 2014 with a single coffee van (and a dream) has now become West Berkshire Roastery - complete with two coffee roasters and a Labrador who thinks he’s the CEO.

Along the way, I discovered that coffee is one big, tangled mess - dodgy practices and shady tactics all over the place. But there’s also a whole lot of amazing farmers doing it right. So, I ditched the usual suspects and set off on a quest for the good stuff: direct-traded coffees served with a generous side of transparency.

With some caffeine-fuelled creativity, I’m here to bring you one of the finest (and cleanest) coffee experiences possible. It’s coffee refreshingly drama free.

Our Roastery Collection consisting of Signature Gold, Black Gold & White Gold is fully independently lab tested for artificial pesticides, moulds and mycotoxins.

They are also 100% naturally grown, free of artificial pesticides & glyphosate. We no longer get these coffees certified by the Soil Association .

This Coffee

Iwannitosa (Iwan) Putra is a farmer and processor based in Atu Lintang, Takengon district, with his wife, a teacher at a nearby school, and his two children. Iwan has a small farm of his own, but also buys cherries from 440 local smallholder farmers. He has built a wet mill and drying tents to process his coffee, and also treats his waste water properly. Iwan and his farmers have an extremely strict tolerance for high quality cherry selection, only selecting the highest quality cherries for processing to maintain quality.

This lot is sourced from 50 farmers in Bener Meriah, central Aceh.

The Region

Iwan’s processing facility is located at the top of a mountain around 1 hour from Takengon city, in Atu Lintang district. The mountains of Takengon are one of the most famous regions in Sumatra for high quality arabica coffees.

Aceh has a long history with coffee, which began during the Dutch colonial period in the 1930s. Even after the end of colonization in 1945, the coffee plantations remained. These plantations were later distributed by local authorities to the Gayo people, an ethnic group native to Central Aceh and Bener Meriah.

The Gayo take great pride in being coffee farmers. Even during difficult times—such as the GAM rebellion from 2003 to 2005, or the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022—they did not abandon their land. The Gayo were among the few who continued to care for and maintain their coffee trees, despite the challenges.

The Process

Iwan accepts only the ripest and highest quality cherries for processing. These cherries are floated for density separation and then dried on a patio under a specialised canopy for 15-25 days depending on climatic conditions.

Roasting Perfection

Unique 1%: We roast using high airflow to reduce impurities for a cleaner taste. 99% of beans aren't roasted this way.

Excellent coffee and organic 🤗

I have found it very difficult to find a good house coffee that is both tastey and organic at a cost that is fair. I have now - Signature Gold. An excellent brew, quickly delivered, well packaged and most importantly freshly ground. Will be buying more. Also very happy with the single origin coffee I have tried.

Kenya Delight

Kenya coffee is a big favourite and this one is particularly memorable. It is medium strength and has a lovely mellow caramel flavour. A slightly smoother option than the WBR Gold blend, which is my go-to option when Kenya coffee is not available.

The Best

A few months ago I decided to switch to organic coffee.
I looked to a few brands online, and when I found west berkshire roastery, my intuative side knew it was the right choice.

After ordering 3 packs of coffee and tasting them upon arrival, it was without a shadow of a doubt that I had made the right choice.

All of they're coffee's are excellent, and I do not use the word excellent lightly.
It is by far the best organic coffee I have ever tasted and bought.

Not only their website is great, but also their customor service is perfect.
A brand to be trusted and a very high quality product they are selling.

I couldn't rate west berkshire roastery any higher <3
