Our Story

I'm Alex and what started in 2014 with a single coffee van (and a dream) has now become West Berkshire Roastery - complete with two coffee roasters and a Labrador who thinks he’s the CEO.

Along the way, I uncovered some truths: coffee is the planet’s most sprayed crop. Pesticides? Chemicals? Absolutely everywhere. So, I ditched the usual beans and went on a quest for the good stuff: organically farmed, direct-traded coffees that don’t come with a side of pesticides.

With a bit of Berkshire flair and caffeine-fuelled creativity, I’m here to bring you one of the finest (and cleanest) coffee experiences you’ll ever sip. I hope you’ll agree. It’s coffee refreshingly drama free.

Tropical Bahia is a product of unique circumstances. Producers based in the highest elevations in state of Bahia have some of the best coffee cultivation conditions in Brazil but often encounter problems with drying due to high humidity and rainfall during the harvest and processing season.

For this reason many choose to transport their cherries around 50km to the neighbouring Caatinga biome, known for its warmer, drier climate. En route, the cherries undergo a unique fermentation process in a closed truck. The process never lasts more than 24 hours, but the resulting cup profile is packed with fruity sweetness.

Meet some of our Tropical Bahia Producers:

    Manoelito Ataide Santos, Fazenda Baixadao

“I had great influence from my Father who has always lived in the countryside. I left other activities that I had, and decided to be a coffee producer, just like my father was, replicating his knowledge.”

Sidmar Candido Da Silva, Fazenda Campo Belo

“Coffee is our main source of income. Our Family comes together and carries out all the harvest and post-harvest work together. With great dedication, we always seek to improve our coffee quality."

    Roasting Perfection

Unique 1%: We roast using high airflow to reduce impurities for a cleaner taste. 99% of beans aren't roasted this way.

    Coffee yay

I love the caffinated Yeti, so much so my eldest daughter ordered some for me got Christmas. It's very subtle fruit taste but full coffee flavour. So far in all the coffee I've ordered, there isn't one I've dislike

    Very good beans, nice people

Brilliantly fresh organic Planadas beans (rapid delivery). Punchy flavour - proper coffee hit.
I stopped off at the business the other day - impressively well organised and clean. Obviously dedicated people. Had a useful chat. It is feasible to get your own container filled, if you schedule it appropriately.

Brazil Bahia - carnival in a cup

This Roaster's Choice has a strong fruity aroma with a tropical taste. With milk, it's a bit like an indulgent milkshake - sweet, fresh, and rich.
