Frequently Asked Questions

Does decaf coffee still have caffeine?

Yes. Decaf coffee and decaffeinated coffee still contain some caffeine. The final caffeine content changes with your dose and brewing method. If you’re managing caffeine intake, choose full decaf later in the day.

What is Swiss Water decaf?

Swiss Water decaf is decaffeinated coffee beans made with a water-based method. The Swiss Water process uses water to remove caffeine while protecting flavour compounds, so the cup still tastes like coffee.

Should I buy coffee beans or ground coffee?

Whole coffee beans stay fresher for longer. Ground coffee is faster and easier. Choose decaf ground coffee if convenience matters most. Choose whole coffee beans if you want maximum control over taste.

Is decaf good for espresso?

Yes. Use an espresso grind and treat it like regular coffee: tune your recipe for your espresso machine, then adjust grind and water temperature until it tastes right.

Where do your decaf coffee beans come from?

Simmer Down is sourced from Cajamarca, a high-altitude growing region in northern Peru. The beans are Bourbon and Typica varietals, processed using the washed method, which is why the cup is clean and sweet rather than heavy or earthy. Organic, Fairtrade certified, and direct-traded.

Are your decaf beans tested for mycotoxins?

Yes. Simmer Down is part of our Roastery Collection, which means it goes through the same independent lab testing as our other coffees - checked for moulds, mycotoxins, and artificial pesticides before it ships. Most brands don't do this for their decaf. We do. More on what we test for and why it matters here.

What's the difference between Simmer Down Decaf and Simmer Down 50% Decaf?

Same beans, same roast, same flavour profile. The 50% version blends the full decaf with a regular bean in equal parts, which cuts the caffeine roughly in half without changing the taste. It's a good option if you're stepping down gradually, or if you want an afternoon coffee that won't keep you up without going fully caffeine-free.
