What is the most economical way to buy coffee?

For most habitual coffee lovers, the most economical way to buy coffee is a coffee subscription. Our 1kg Coffee Plans work out at about 37p a mug, over 25% less than buying the same coffee one bag at a time. Every Roastery Blend is roasted to order and independently lab-tested for pesticides, mould and mycotoxins. Pick your blend, choose whole bean or your grind, and pause, skip or cancel any time.

Organic coffee beans

What is the most economical way to buy coffee?

Buy whole beans, straight from the roaster, on a subscription, in the biggest bag you'll finish while it's fresh. Each of those steps brings the cost per cup down, and together they take a mug of our coffee from about 51p to about 37p.

Here's what a cup costs across the ways you can buy our coffee, using 15g per mug (a brew bag holds 10g):

The 1kg plan is over 25% cheaper than buying the same coffee as a one-off. If you drink espresso, an 18g double shot from a 1kg plan comes to around 45p.

Bigger only saves money if you finish it

Coffee is at its best in the weeks after roasting. A cheap kilo that goes flat in the cupboard isn't a saving, so match the plan to how much you drink:

  • About one mug a day: 500g every month
  • About two mugs a day: 1kg every month
  • A household of coffee drinkers: 1kg more often, set from your account

That way each bag is finished while it still tastes as it should.

What about supermarket coffee?

Supermarket beans can be cheaper per kilo. What you usually can't see is when they were roasted, because most bags carry a best-before date rather than a roast date. Ours has the roast date on every bag, and we roast to order, so the cost per cup buys you coffee that's days old, not months.

How our coffee subscription works

  1. Choose your coffee. Pick a Roastery Blend, or the Simmer Down decaf.
  2. Choose your size and grind. 500g or 1kg, as whole beans or ground for cafetière, filter, AeroPress or espresso.
  3. We roast and ship it straight away. Your first bag goes out immediately. After that, it arrives every 30 days unless you change it.
  4. Stay in control. Change the frequency, swap coffees, pause, skip or cancel from your own account whenever you like. There's no minimum term.

Delivery is free and tracked on every order. We roast to order and aim to ship the same day, with an 11 am cut-off.

An organic coffee subscription you can believe in

Plenty of coffee calls itself clean. We'd rather show our working.

Our best-selling blend, Signature Gold, is Demeter certified organic. It's grown by the Chirinos cooperative in Cajamarca, Peru, a group of hundreds of farming families at around 1,500m, without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. Each year we buy the whole crop, so you won't find it anywhere else.

On top of that, our whole Roastery Collection (White Gold, Signature Gold, Black Gold and Simmer Down Decaf) is independently lab-tested for artificial pesticides, mould and mycotoxins. You can read how and why we test on our blog.

Then we roast it in small batches here in Berkshire and post it out fresh, with the roast date on every bag.
